Police believe driving too fast for the conditions was a factor in the crash, along with heavy snow and whiteout conditions.

MSP is asking people to use alternative routes, slow down and drive safely.

In addition to the crash in the Hartford area, another crash occurred west of there, near Watervliet in Berrien County. This incident also resulted in a full closure of I-94 shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

The crash on I-94 eastbound at Exit 41 was cleared around 3:40 p.m. and lanes were reopened, MDOT said.

Tim McGee, director of the Van Buren County Central Dispatch Center, said seven tractor-trailers were involved in three separate accidents, along with other passenger vehicles.

“With the current weather, I would avoid I-94,” McGee said.

Westbound traffic was diverted off the highway at the Hartford exit, Exit 46. The timing of when westbound I-94 will reopen is unknown, police said.
