The Garden State recorded 574 fatal crashes in all of 2023, according to final statistics from the New Jersey State Police.

606 people were killed in the clashes.

These numbers actually represent a significant decrease in tragedies on the state’s roads compared to 2022. In 2023, there were 72 fewer fatal crashes and 83 fewer fatalities.

“Traffic-related fatalities continue to be a leading cause of death in New Jersey and across the country,” said Col. Patrick Callahan, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “However, law enforcement and certain nonprofit organizations will continue to work to reduce the number of traffic fatalities on our roads through comprehensive traffic and public safety programs that include education and enforcement.”

According to the NJSP report, nearly 12% of all drivers killed in crashes were legally drunk. Motorcyclists were involved in 89 fatal accidents. The pedestrian death toll was 171.

As of November 27 this year, the number of fatal accidents (586) had already exceeded the 2023 figure. By the same date, 618 people had lost their lives.

Deadly days and times

NJSP’s comprehensive data report provides deeper insight into the locations and timing of fatal crashes each year.

According to the report, the month of October recorded the highest number of road deaths in 2023 at 64, due to 58 fatal accidents. 60 traffic deaths were recorded in June, August and November.

March recorded the lowest number of deaths last year at 34.

According to the data, fatal accidents occurred more frequently between the evening and night hours. The report, which split its findings into 24 one-hour windows, found that the hour between 5 and 6 p.m. recorded the most fatal accidents: 44.

The report also lists traffic fatalities by day of the week. The most fatal accidents were recorded on Friday with 94. There were 92 fatal accidents recorded on both Sunday and Monday during the year.
