15 Mexican Recipes You’ll Want to Make All Winter Long

For me, winter is synonymous with Mexican cuisine. While I eat Mexican food every day because of my heritage, I really enjoy it in the winter. At my family’s Christmas parties, we don’t eat ham like other people. We eat warming bowls of menudo, hot tamales and pozole – that means winter to me. So if you’re looking for new recipes to try this winter or just need a break from the usual holiday suspects, you’re in luck. Here are some of my favorite Mexican recipes that will keep you warm and cozy all season long.

Caldo de Res (Mexican beef soup)

Although I’m more of a fan of Caldo de Pollo, you can’t go wrong with either version. The beef is tender, juicy and full of flavor – making you forget how gloomy it is outside.

Menudo

This is a classic in my household. One of my fondest memories is watching my grandma make this dish before Christmas, cozying up next to the stove and oven because it was so warm. Refine this soup with coriander and lime for an extra flavor kick.

Authentic Mole Sauce

This sauce is literally heaven. While it may be more about the hot sauce, the spiciness is definitely worth the effort. I like to drizzle this on enchiladas or tacos.

Churros

I always wait in line for hours to try this dessert. Evoke the feeling of a summer market when you make these churros, complete with a chocolate or caramel dipping sauce!

Tamales Oaxaqueños

Tamales are usually the first to arrive at my dinner table. If you have the chance, I highly recommend getting the family together to prepare these dishes for the holidays – it truly takes a village to make this dish. But if you’re like my family and tried for a year but quickly grew tired of the work, you can always support small businesses and order your tamales there.

Authentic Mexican Chile Rellenos

According to one of our community members, this dish is “very tasty. I use cheddar cheese and also cream cheese in my dish and they are delicious. A great success here at home.” Is there anything else to say about that?

Authentic Mexican hot chocolate

What is the difference between Mexican hot chocolate and regular hot chocolate? The difference lies in the level of spice and the chocolate. Typically, Mexican hot chocolate uses Mexican chocolate like Nestle Abuelita, which has a certain level of spice. This recipe specifically uses dried chili de arbol.

Sopa De Lima (Mexican Lime Soup)

“This was very light and delicious!” wrote user Sherbear1 in his review. “Since I didn’t have 6 limes, I just grated some lime zest into the soup when I cooked the chicken and it turned out great! I love the strong lime flavor in this. I will definitely do this again! Thanks for the great recipe.”

Slow Cooker Pozole

Menudo has a certain consistency that some people don’t like. To please everyone at the table, my family always makes pozole as an alternative. My mother practically claims a pot of this soup just for herself, which means we usually cook more to accommodate her.

Arroz con leche

Arroz con Leche is basically rice pudding with a hint of cinnamon. While you can eat it cold, it’s better hot and straight from the stove if it’s cloudy outside.

Flan Mexicano (Mexican Flan)

I’ve written before about my love for this dessert and how every time I go home my mom insists that I make it for her while I’m there. Similar to arroz con leche, this dessert can be eaten cold but tastes much better warm.

Fideo

“Fideo is quick and easy to make with roasted pasta, tomatoes and spices,” wrote user TINYANT1. “I got this recipe from my mother-in-law. It goes great with any meat dish, including carne asada. As a side dish, I use Fideo instead of rice.”

Mexican Christmas Punch (Ponche Navideno)

For the adults at your Christmas party, this one is just the thing. “This traditional Mexican fruit punch is spiked with rum and is best served during the holiday season,” user FOODBEAST wrote. “Garnish each cup with a fresh hibiscus flower and a sugarcane (or cinnamon) stick.”

Capirotada (Mexican bread pudding)

If you’re a fan of monkey bread, meet its even sweeter cousin: capirotada. This bread pudding is a lovely blend of walnuts and cinnamon and is best served warm.

Beef Enchiladas with Spicy Red Sauce

You can’t go wrong with enchiladas, especially in the winter. “These are the best enchiladas I have ever made,” Allrecipes community member Joni Hoffman wrote in her review. “I think the homemade sauce makes a big difference in terms of taste.”
