17-year-old accused of stealing a car and causing an accident on I-90

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A 17-year-old has been charged in connection with the theft of a BMW and head-on collision with another car on I-90 Monday morning, according to New York State Police.

Police said they tried to stop the teenager on Route 33 just before 8 a.m. Monday because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was using a cellphone while driving. The teen drove off in a 2016 BMW that had been reported stolen in Amherst.

The driver is accused of exiting eastbound on Williams Street in the westbound lane and colliding head-on with another car. The teen then allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody. Police said the teen was in possession of the vehicle keys and stolen AirPods.

The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.

The 17-year-old, who could not be identified due to his age, was accused of the following:

  • third-degree unlawful flight

  • Obstruction of government administration

  • Third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle

  • Third-degree criminal possession of stolen property

  • Resisting arrest

  • second-degree reckless endangerment

  • criminal possession of stolen property

  • Multiple vehicle and traffic violations

The teen will be arraigned in Buffalo Family Court.
