19-year-old from Norfolk convicted of attempted murder of Virginia Beach officer

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk man was convicted Thursday of multiple charges, including the attempted murder of a Virginia Beach police officer in connection with a shooting in the Level Green neighborhood last year.

A jury found 19-year-old Thomas Davenport Jr. guilty of the following charges: attempted second-degree murder, malicious shooting at an occupied structure, malicious shooting at an occupied vehicle, use of a firearm, vehicle tampering and unlawful destruction, according to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office of property.

The charges stem from a nighttime shooting that occurred on August 2, 2023.

According to prosecutors, an officer in the Level Green area was working undercover in an unmarked vehicle after a series of car break-ins.

According to prosecutors, the officer saw a group of men, including Davenport Jr., walking in the area. When the officer noticed one of the men in a driveway near cars, they made a U-turn to watch him. The person in the driveway then began shooting at the officer’s car. The officer returned fire and then heard several gunmen begin shooting at him.

The officer took cover and was not struck by a bullet, prosecutors say. However, there was damage in the area as a result of the gunfire: several cars and buildings in the area were hit. One of the bullets passed through a house and hit the headboard of a bed where people were sleeping.

The following night, the police also received reports of theft.

Davenport Jr., then 18, was arrested about a week later, prosecutors said. During an interview with police, he admitted to shooting at the officer’s van.

Police also arrested two 16-year-old boys.

Davenport Jr.’s sentencing is scheduled for March 10.

One of the accused teens was found delinquent on two counts of attempted second-degree murder, use of a firearm, malicious shooting at an occupied vehicle and two counts of vehicle tampering.

The second teen’s court date has been set for March 24, 2025. News 3 reported earlier this year that he will be tried as an adult.
