2 Canadians arrested for failed assassination attempt in Monterey County

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has released new details about a triple stabbing that occurred Sunday evening. Officers responded to reports of a stabbing near 300 Bollenbacher Drive at 10 p.m. Officers located three people with stab wounds. Their injuries ranged from minor to critical. They were taken to a local hospital and are expected to survive. Officials say 25-year-old Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoff was obsessed with a woman with whom he had played video games online for years. He then boarded a plane with Darius Avery Whyte, 25, and landed in Salinas without the woman knowing they were in the city. According to a deputy spokesman, Vandorhoff then posed as a delivery man while carrying a package containing handcuffs, a knife and duct tape. When the friend opened the door, Vanderhoff began stabbing him. The girlfriend comes to her boyfriend’s aid and stabs the suspect. Vanderhoff then strangles and stabs the woman. Whyte is questioned at the scene but says he has no idea what is going on and is allowed to leave. Further investigation reveals that he is part of the plan and was arrested on a tarmac in San Jose on Monday morning as he prepared to fly back to Canada. Vandorhoff and Whyte were both booked into the Monterey County Jail. Vandorhoff was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, assault, stalking and burglary. His bail was set at $4,150,000. Whyte was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and attempted murder. His bail was set at $1,000,000.
