2 women rescued after car sinks into pond in St. Augustine – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL. (WSVN) – Two women were left shaken after they became trapped in a car that sank in a pond near St. Augustine. The passenger in that car remembered fighting for her life.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the two 18-year-old women were trapped in the sinking car.

“We just fell into the water. Please hurry, water is coming into the car,” said one of the women.

“I was scared (expletive), I couldn’t move my legs,” the other woman said.

The car’s passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, said her friend was tired after a long day at work. She said they were almost to her home in St. Augustine.

“She thought the car was closer than it was and then she turned right into the pond,” she said.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office released video that showed the car sinking.

Deputies arrived within minutes.

“Watch out, watch out!” said a deputy. “Get out of the car. Can you swim?”

The passenger said she was in an accident about a month ago and was suffering from nerve damage. She said she couldn’t feel her legs and couldn’t swim properly.

“The moment I got up on the seat to jump out the window, my legs gave out and I fell face forward into the water,” she said.

She and her friend found a way to get to the deputies.

Deputy Jayde Glines jumped into the water and created a human chain.

“If we didn’t get there in time, these girls would stay in the car,” Glines said.

Some people online wondered why more lawmakers didn’t jump in.

“If we go in and they start jumping on us and sinking us into the deep pond, then we’re in an even worse situation trying to get more people out of the water now,” Glines said.

The passenger said she was grateful for the quick response and was glad she made it.

“I’m proud of myself, like I feel like a real survivor,” she said.

Deputies said exhaustion was a major reason for the crash.

As for the passenger, she said she still had problems with her legs and needed shock therapy.
