Lt. Scott Seiders of the White County Sheriff’s Office said that at 9:04 p.m. Friday, White County Dispatch received a “shots fired” call from Violet Holifield at 479 County Line Road outside of Rose Bud, who said that her husband Gary Knight had been shot twice.
Deputies, NorthStar EMS and detectives responded to the scene. When they arrived, Seiders said Knight was outside his residence and “sustained injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.” He was taken to the emergency room at Unity Health-White County Medical Center, where he later died.
According to Seiders, there were other witnesses at the scene who gave statements to investigators.
At approximately 9:21 p.m., Barley, who lives on Lone Star Road, contacted White County Dispatch and confirmed that he was involved in the shooting. He identified his firearm to operators and said he was waiting for help at his apartment.
When officers arrived, Barley was arrested and given a verbal explanation of his rights before speaking to investigators. He made a statement about his involvement and “intentional actions.” In addition, a search and seizure warrant was issued for Barley’s residence and property. The search extended into the early hours of Saturday and several items related to the incident, including firearms and ballistic material, were identified, collected and seized as evidence.
Knight’s body, along with other evidence, was scheduled to be submitted to the state medical examiner’s office and state crime lab for review and examination.
