3 takeaways after the 49ers were demolished by Bills

The 49ers were demolished on Sunday night. It was a snowball in which the Bills went downhill and stayed downhill while pounding the 49ers into the ground.

San Francisco lost 35-10 and Christian McCaffrey in a game that could serve as a fitting representation of a season that never should have happened.

Christian McCaffrey’s injury

The 49ers tried to convince everyone of a comeback in the second half of the season. That would be around 2021 or 2022! But the reality has been so long that it felt like 2020.

This season has, of course, been marked by injuries of the most devastating kind. The 49ers had Javon Hargrave, Brandon Aiyuk and Talanoa Hufanga injured at the end of the season. You have to hope it’s not over for Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey left with a left leg injury that was not caused by physical contact and was considered a knee injury. A repeat from behind showed a wave in his leg extending from the calf up. The 49ers will provide an update when one is available, but he left early in the second half.

Their argument for making a real run this season was McCaffrey. They guaranteed him money without being obliged to do so. And now they probably need to take control and may not have him.

The run cannot be stopped

The conditions made it almost impossible for either side to withstand the onslaught. But the 49ers were particularly pathetic against the Bills’ running game, especially in the first half.

While the 49ers were able to pass the ball themselves, they ultimately went for field goals and missed a few of them. The Bills just put the ball in.

Buffalo ran 38 times for 220 yards. Even though the 49ers ran 27 times for 153 yards, that was irrelevant.

They left Buffalo’s building sad and cold as the Bills celebrated their fifth straight AFC East title. The flight home to San Jose will be a long one.

The reality

It’s hard to imagine this team going anywhere.

There were a few theoretical chances for the 49ers to get back into the game. As they drove the length of the field to cut the score to 28-10, they put the ball in the hands of Kyle Juszczyk, who fumbled at the one-yard line.

Brock Purdy fumbled a ball with no soul around him and turned it over. Deebo Samuel turned the ball over on a kick return.

These are just a few of the outrageous, almost hilarious mishaps. And no one should be surprised. Even though this team was under pressure with reinforcements on offense, their defense worked. The offensive failed and turned around several times.

Folks, this is not a serious football team. It wasn’t a serious football team all year. Now they will try to top the table and win five in a row to get into the playoffs without any easy outs. If they somehow manage to do that, it will be because they look fundamentally different than the team we’ve seen all season. Does anyone think he is capable of this? Nobody should.
