38 students withdrew from the Roy J. Smith Middle School after they are fatally assembled, says Kisd Superintendent

Killen, Texas (KWTX) – The students of the Roy J. Smith Middle School returned to school on March 25, two weeks after the 14-year-old Serenity Baker had been fatally stabbed on campus during an argument.

Killen ISD superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Fey said the school had a visitor interest of 93 percent on Tuesday. According to Fey, 38 students withdrew from Roy J. Smith, and many of these students returned to their home campus in the district after they had previously switched to Roy J. Smith.

Fey said there was a single entry point for all students on Tuesday, with some of them entering school at 7:30 a.m., the superintendent said that it took some time to bring each child into the system. According to Fey, the last student entered the building around 9 a.m.

The superintendent reassured the parents that the school district has to do with bullying and violence on campus.

“We have no increase in violence. What we have is a consistent pattern of violence at KISD in our schools. Things like fights and attacks. These are great things,” said Dr. Fey to: “If we have an attack on an employee who tries to separate a fight that is attacked by a student, we will go forward with the recommendation for the crosses to 180 days.”

Dr. Fey says Killen ISD now has several security levels, but declined to indicate further details. “Ultimately, security begins with the surveillance of children. This is one of the things that are reinforced how our adults monitor the hallway in the system, how they monitor offices,” she said.

As for the implementation of a guideline for clear backpacks, Fey said that KISD has no district attitude yet.

“We have Campus leaders who took a certain attitude and caused a little waves,” she said. “As a district, we would like to switch to a consistent guidelines for backpacks to clarify the guidelines for the pockets. We are not there yet, but we have plans to find a consistent expectation.”

Baker was stabbed in the neck on Monday, March 10, with a 3.5-inch tactical folding knife. A 14-year-old colleague was taken into custody after the fatal argument.

Fey repeated metal detectors on the Roy J. Middle School on the day of the fatal stab and dispute rumors that were switched off the devices. No further information on the criminal investigation was submitted.

The district has also shared today that it updates his crisis office on the time to include a FAQ with the latest information on this incident.
