5 'The Wizard of Oz' Movies to Stream Right Now If You Liked 'Wicked'

We are afflicted with the disease and it is called “Wicked” fever.

Over the past week, we’ve made room for all things Oz: we’ve reread Gregory Maguire’s raunchy and radical Wicked novel and strutted around our living spaces doing the viral dance to “What Is This Feeling.” ?” listed. No, we can’t get enough of the musical phenomenon that chronicles the unlikely friendship between witches Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande).

As you probably know, Wicked is a prequel to the original film The Wizard of Oz, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum’s extensive children’s book series. If you’re interested in learning more about munchkins and flying monkeys — or just fancy another trip down the yellow brick road — here are five more “Oz” movies you can watch right from your couch.

What more can we really say about one of the most perfect films of all time? 85 years later, the tear-jerking film The Wizard of Oz still looks better than almost any film released since, with its vibrant colors, stirring musical numbers and stunning practical sets and effects. Judy Garland beautifully captures Dorothy’s naivety and longing, and Margaret Hamilton almost invented the word “iconic” with her green-skinned, slipper-hungry villain. A special thanks to the Lollipop Guild, whose fits are still unsurpassed almost a century later.

Although it was a critical and commercial failure upon release, there’s so much to love about this modern, all-black adaptation of Baum’s story, which imagines Dorothy (Diana Ross) as a deeply persecuted Harlem teacher. There’s nothing quite like seeing Michael Jackson as a wobbly-limbed scarecrow, and all the songs are so insanely infectious that you can almost forget about those horrible, sentient trash cans.

It’s a little hilarious that Disney’s first foray into Oz is pure nightmare fuel. The film begins with young Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) escaping from a mental institution after being treated for her “delusions” about a land over the rainbow. From there, the film only gets stranger as she and her pet chicken float back to Oz, where they find a steampunk wasteland haunted by eerie creatures. (The scars of the Wheelers and Princess Mombi’s heads will remain with us forever.)

On paper, a Muppets version of The Wizard of Oz with Miss Piggy playing four different witches sounds absolutely inspired. It’s neither as funny nor as atmospheric as you might remember, although Ashanti gets some real catchy tunes as an aspiring singer who ends up in Munchkinland. And Quentin Tarantino makes a fittingly crazy cameo as himself, accusing Kermit of increasingly violent methods to kill the evil witch.

Sam Raimi’s Poppy-inspired ennui is an over-the-top attempt to capture the magic of “Wicked,” as the film spins its own origin story involving the Wizard (James Franco), Glinda (Michelle Williams) and the Wicked Witch of the West (Mila Kunis). . The film is an eyesore, although the way it expands on Baum’s original lore is at least intriguing, incorporating book characters like the Quadlings and porcelain dolls.
