6 injured in the Waterbury House Fire

Waterbury, Conn. (WTNH) – Six people were sent to the hospital after a fire broke out early Sunday morning in a house in Waterbury.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Waterbury, firefighters arrived in a family home on the Gail Drive.

“Black smoke, just all types of smoke,” said neighbor Georgana Harvis.

Flames illuminated the sky in an orange shine while smoke filled the air.

“Companies came to the heavy fire around 2:00 a.m.,” said Mike Hilinski, head of the battalion. “It was an extensive fire, five inmates sent to the hospital, so it was serious and we had injured a fireman, treated and released in a local hospital.”

A total of six people were injured: two adults, three children and one fireman. All six were taken to the hospital and everyone expected it to go well. Hilinski said the five residents made it outside before the crews arrived.

He said firefighters had made an aggressive internal attack before the conditions, and they had to pursue a defensive approach from outside the house. The heavy and challenging conditions led to a fight that lasted more than four hours and woke up the neighbors in the early morning.

“The smell of Rauch aroused me,” said Harvis. “Two seconds later, fire engines came down the street and it has been like that since then.”

“Looked out the window and saw smoke and everything that comes from the house down there,” said neighbor Amanda Scott Nelson.

The house is now charred with the roof, some of which has collapsed. Waterbury firefighters said the house was a total loss.

“Basically, great apology for the loss of your house. It is a great inconvenience, especially during this time, and our prayers are with you, ”said Nelson.

Chef Hilinski said that the cause of the fire, including the place where it started, would be examined.
