I was looking for a reliable pair of softshell bib shorts for warmer ski days and the Avanti bib shorts are exactly what I was looking for. I love that they embody the retro vibe and the stripe pays homage to the history of skiing. More importantly, they have additional reinforcement at the hem so they will last for years. They also use Recco technology to provide additional security. Now I just have to decide on the color. –Jamie Aranoff

Halfdays Light Cushion ski socks

Maroon and red ski sock

I have such poor circulation in my feet that I stuffed regular hand warmers (not even toe warmers) into my boots for years, and the discomfort was better than the loss of feeling in my toes. Luckily, I discovered the wonders of toe warmers and heated boot liners. Still, I need a reliable sock to get me through the day, and one of my favorites is the Light Cushion Ski Sock from Halfdays. This Black Friday I will be stocking up on more socks and also picking up a few extras to give as gifts! –Jamie Aranoff

Expedition Crocodile Classic Gaiters

Buy now (for every $100 spent you will be entered to win a $5,000 grand prize)

This is actually something I habit will be buying this year, and for good reason. My parents have each owned a pair of Outdoor Research gaiters for nearly three decades, and although the colors are a little faded and the strap a little worn, they are as good as ever. You’ve worn the gaiters every winter while cross-country skiing, shoveling snow, and hiking. And when my parents aren’t using them, my brother and I occasionally borrow them for our own cold-weather ventures. If you’re looking for gear that will last for generations, look no further. This is designed to last. –Jamie Aranoff

You can’t go wrong giving warmth to a loved one. (Photo: Courtesy of Stio)

Buy now (men) Buy now (women)

If you’re looking for a jacket that will keep you warm around town or on the slopes, this is it. The high loft down retains heat to keep you warm on the coldest days and the jacket is remarkably lightweight due to the warmth it provides. When zipped up, the hood is snug and provides excellent protection for the chin and ears, making the hat and scarf worth the money. The fit is flattering but not too tight, a very casual look that is not too long. The neatly crafted cuffs with internal elastic make it easy to put on a glove, although there is no tightening fastener to ensure that air can occasionally flow up the sleeve when you are not wearing a glove or mitten. —Giorgia Menetre

Arc’teryx Proton Lightweight Hoodie

Buy now (men) Buy now (women)

Arc’teryx’s Proton line is one of those pieces that is unparalleled in its category. The inner material is made of an almost air pocket-like material that quickly wicks away sweat while keeping you warm. This lining makes it the ultimate midlayer, especially in the backcountry. With a Gore-Tex outer shell, you can also wear the jacket as an outermost layer (it also makes a great rain jacket).

Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Vest

This editor’s favorite vest is now 50 percent off. (Photo: Courtesy of Mountain Hardware)

Buy Now ($129, normally $260)

I’ve collected several Ghost Whisperer pieces over the years, but one thing I never leave out of my ski bag is my Ghost Whisperer vest. At just under 4.6 ounces, it’s literally light as a feather, yet it’s filled with 800-fill RDS-certified down so the warmth-to-weight ratio is excellent. I always put it on under my jacket in the morning for a little extra warmth, and if I do need to take off a layer at lunchtime, the vest fits easily into the inside pocket of my jacket. It is so light and compact that you can easily take it with you. The only thing against this vest is that it’s a bit more expensive for a sleeveless jacket, so it’s really a no-brainer to score yourself or your favorite skier 50 percent off on it during the Black Friday sale. –Samantha Berman
