The Alabama Wildlife Center keeps rescued birds warm in cold weather

PELHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Injured birds at the Alabama Wildlife Center are getting extra help to stay warm in the freezing temperatures.

All birds on the Treetop Nature Trail have heat lamps in their enclosures.

The Alabama Wildlife Center Oak Mountain State Park is one of the few facilities in the entire state where people can bring these injured animals for rehabilitation.

The facility is structured differently depending on the needs of the bird.

While some naturally withstand the winter climate, managing director Chris Sykes says others need to go inside.

“Some species are migratory birds and have to stay with us until spring, like ruby-throated hummingbirds, if during migration they are late when they leave and they have a broken wing or some problem “Maybe we have to overwinter with us” said Sykes. “There are problems with the heat because they can’t be outside. The same goes for migratory hawks. Some species we just have to bring into the house. Heat lamps are required, which significantly increases operating costs.”

If the public would like to help, the Alabama Wildlife Center is a nonprofit organization and is happy to accept Donate online.
