Johnnies use size to sink Crimson

As was the case earlier in the week against UMass, the size of the Harvard men’s basketball team was on display on Saturday.

RJ Luis Jr. and Kadary Richmond combined for 42 points as St. John’s grabbed 50 rebounds as a team in a 77-64 victory over the Crimson at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, NY

Luis recorded his third 20-point double-double of the season for St. John’s (6-2), scoring a game-high 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting and 10 boards. Richmond scored 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting for Rick Pitino’s Johnnies.

The Johnnies scored 42 of their 77 points in the game and had 20 second chance points to 6 from Tommy Amaker’s team.

“We were simply inferior on the backboard. They are a great length and size. “That’s been an Achilles’ heel for our team this season,” the Crimson coach said. “They brought it to us to a certain extent. … We need to figure out how to do a better job there.”

Junior guard Chandler Piggé scored a team-high 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for Harvard (2-6), starting 9-0 and 24-8. Trailing by 12 at halftime and 18 in the second, the Crimson got within 63-55 with 5:40 to play, but only made three field goals the rest of the game.

Harvard visits Holy Cross on Wednesday evening.
