He also showed incredible toughness during his tenure with the Colts, overcoming an injured kidney and a torn abdominal muscle. Unfortunately, injuries caught up with him and he missed the entire 2017 season due to shoulder surgery. He returned in 2018 and played so well that he was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year. But just two weeks before the start of the 2019 season, Luck shocked the NFL world and left it all behind.

“I’m excited,” he told ESPN. “I think Stanford is taking a confident and innovative step. We are, hands down, the best athletic department in college sports. We have to prove it again in football and we are happy to be part of this challenge.”

Luck played football at Stanford, where he led the team to BCS bowl berths in his final two seasons; He also finished runner-up for the Heisman Trophy both years.

“I am a product of this university, Nerd Nation; I love this place,” Luck said, according to the Associated Press. “I believe strongly in Stanford’s unique approach to athletics and academics and the opportunity to return our program to the top.
