An extremely rare Bugatti worth a staggering $100 million has been missing for decades.

The Bugatti Type 57SC La Voiture Noire is one of the rarest cars in the world.

It was a Type 57SC Atlantic, nicknamed “La Voiture Noire,” which translates to “The Black Car,” and one of only four examples made in the 1930s.

The stunning vehicle was designed and owned by Jean Bugatti, son of Bugatti founder Ettore.

The Bugatti Type 57SC La Voiture Noire has been missing for decades

At the height of World War II, Bugatti wanted to protect his beloved La Voiture Noire from enemy capture.

So in 1938 he decided to load it onto a train and transport it to Bordeaux – a good plan, right?

But what happened next remains a mystery to this day.

In fact, it is so mysterious that it is not even known whether La Voiture Noire arrived at its intended destination or not.

All we know is that there have been no confirmed sightings since 1938 – making the lost car something of a “Holy Grail” of the automotive world.

As you can imagine, with such a fascinating mystery, there are numerous theories, speculations and bold but ultimately unsubstantiated claims about what became of the car and where it may be today.

There are several theories about what happened to the car

A few years ago, a Reddit user claimed to have found the long-lost vehicle, but the claims were soon shut down after experts discovered that both the engine and chassis were different.

Among those who dismissed the claims was Sandy Leith of the Bugatti Trust, who recounted this Jalopnik that the “Atlantic body sits on a standard T57 chassis, which would not have been correct”.

According to some reports, the car continued to be driven by Bugatti engineers until the early 1940s, after its original owner died in a car accident in 1939.

However, the brand has denied these claims, stating that there are no records left since La Voiture Noire disappeared in 1938.

Another theory is that someone saw the car on the train and took it after realizing its value, while a less exciting theory is that it was completely destroyed in an air raid.

Since it has been nearly 90 years since it was last seen, it is unlikely that the mystery will ever be solved, but stranger things have happened.
