College football bowl projections: How chaos affects Alabama, Oklahoma and Ole Miss

With another week of regular season action, 77 teams have qualified for the postseason and two more are guaranteed with two 5-6 team showdowns this weekend.

That leaves only three bowl spots remaining among twelve other teams. It could be the first time in several years that the bowls don’t have to promote the 5-7 team with the best Academic Progress Rate (APR) to fill the field. Unfortunately, this means that several eligible teams could be eliminated from the postseason.

The Big Ten’s roster appears straightforward, while the SEC’s pool of available teams has expanded significantly with Oklahoma’s upset of Alabama. There are 13 SEC teams that have qualified for bowl games. Our prediction of three SEC teams in the CFP bracket extends to teams outside of the SEC’s bowl contracts. The ACC will have at least 12, maybe 13, bowling teams. The Big 12 has nine bowl teams, with two more competing for the postseason this weekend.

Implementation by current and former Pac-12 schools is a challenge for each of their contracted bowls and current conferences. Seven teams have qualified for the Pac-12 Legacy Bowls and another (Oregon State) has a chance to join them this weekend. The Alamo picks first according to the CFP and has no restrictions on the win-loss difference. Then the order is Holiday, Vegas, Sun, LA Bowl and Independence.

The power conference teams that clinched a postseason berth this past weekend include Nebraska, Florida (which upset Ole Miss), West Virginia and Oklahoma for the first time since 2016. We expect the Sooners to get a date with Boston College in the Gasparilla Bowl, which will serve as the opener for a first-round College Football Playoff game on December 20th.

This week, the Virginia-Virginia Tech winner earns bowl eligibility, while power conference teams Michigan State, Wisconsin, Auburn, NC State, Kansas and Cincinnati seek their sixth win.

A friendly reminder: Most non-CFP bows do not have to select their teams in order of conference placement.
