MLB offseason: The San Francisco Giants haven’t made a move yet

The hectic MLB offseason could begin this week. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the winter meetings begin in exactly one week. Soon the chips start to fall. Perhaps. Hopefully.

However, they certainly haven’t started falling yet. The closest the San Francisco Giants came to making a move was when I googled “Winter Meetings” 30 seconds ago to double-check the date and saw that the first hit was for an article titled ” Minasian plans to be aggressive at the winter meetsclicked on it excitedly, then remembered that Giants GM Zack Minasian’s brother is also the GM of an MLB team. I’ll give you two guesses as to which Minasian this article was about.

No, the Giants haven’t done anything this offseason. The moves are starting to happen, from trades to small signings to mid-range signings, to arguably the Giants’ most talented player signing with the Dodgers for big money. And yet, the Giants’ biggest move of the offseason is signing Max Stassi to a minor league contract.

This isn’t really a shot at the Giants. It’s still early. Of Fangraphs’ top 50 free agents in terms of projected 2025 WAR, only six have signed so far. Most teams are still waiting. Only the wait is compounded by the pessimism for the Giants.

They’re reportedly looking at Corbin Burnes, but if the Giants spend more than $200 million on a pitcher this offseason, I’ll be writing ten of you a nice handwritten letter thanking you for reading my articles read about this mediocre team. They’re also reportedly looking at Willy Adames, but if the Giants outbid the Dodgers with the attached qualifying offer to get a big hitter, I’ll bake ten of your cookies and send them to you. They are safe to eat, I promise.

Even the rumor mill surrounding Ha-Seong Kim has completely died down, although I fully expect the Giants to still sign him, for better or worse.

However, it was a very quiet off-season. Maybe that will change today. Maybe that will change this week. But for now, we should assume the Giants will be a remarkably quiet team until they give us reason to think otherwise.
