Volvo VNR Electric passes the 10 million mile mark in customer use

According to a December 2, 2024 press release from Volvo Trucks North America, the Volvo VNR Electric truck model has driven more than 10 million zero-emission miles in customer service since commercial orders began in December 2020.

Nearly 600 Volvo VNR electric trucks are now in use across the U.S. and Canada by fleets of all sizes, from single-driver trucks to fleets of over 100 battery-electric trucks.

“Having driven more than 10 million miles on the Volvo VNR Electric is a monumental achievement that reflects the commitment of our customers, partners and more than 65 Volvo Trucks certified EV dealers across North America,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “In October we celebrated reaching 8 million miles, and now we’ve reached 10 million. This progress is a testament to the trust and commitment of those who believe in our vision of a sustainable future.”

According to Volvo, customers using VNR electric trucks collectively drive more than 200,000 miles per week, which the OEM says underscores the vehicle’s reliability and efficiency in real-world use.

Volvo’s press release describes the VNR Electric as “representative of a comprehensive transportation solutions ecosystem that has propelled Volvo Trucks North America to market leadership and customers to operational success.”

The manufacturer’s push into Class 8 electric trucks began in 2020 with the introduction of the VNR Electric as part of the Volvo LIGHTS project, a $90 million public-private partnership the company hoped would it would lay the foundation for the large-scale introduction of high-performance batteries. Electric trucks by examining the infrastructure and operational adjustments needed to support electric mobility.

Voorhoeve acknowledged that there have been challenges in scaling high-performance, zero-emission solutions.

“Although battery-electric deployments have not expanded as quickly as we expected or hoped, Volvo Trucks remains committed to decarbonizing transportation,” he said.

“Our customers are driving more miles every day, proving that change is not only possible, but already underway,” he continued. “We are optimistic about accelerating the adoption of sustainable technologies through our strong partnerships with our dealers, customers and organizations like PACT (Powering America’s Commercial Transportation).”
