Castor, convicted of murder in Buffalo County, dies in prison

A woman who was twice charged with murder in Buffalo County has died. Wilma Castor was 76.

Castor was convicted in the 1996 shooting death of 53-year-old Thomas Brown. She was found guilty, but was later given a new trial and found guilty a second time.

Castor died at a Lincoln hospital on Monday, December 2nd. Castor was incarcerated at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) in York.

On the evening of December 10, 1996, Tom Brown was found dead at the bottom of a ditch in rural Buffalo County, northwest of Kearney, Nebraska. A doctor later determined that Brown died as a result of three .22-caliber gunshot wounds in a shooting around Thanksgiving Day that year. The couple was previously married and prosecutors argued Castor killed Brown in a dispute over money.

Castor’s sentence began April 26, 2000. She was serving a life sentence in Buffalo County for first-degree murder and other charges.

Although the cause of death has not been determined, the Nebraska Department of Corrections said Castor was being treated for an illness. As always, when an inmate dies in custody, a grand jury conducts an investigation.
