A Tesla will be much better with these stick-on stems

  • Bring back the physical levers behind the steering wheel with this simple, stick-on aftermarket solution.
  • These levers attach behind the steering wheel and you do not need to remove the steering wheel to install them.
  • They are available for the Model 3 as well as the Model S and Model X.

When I drove the refreshed Tesla Model 3, I was impressed by its mix of qualities and the improvements it had over the pre-facelift model. However, not all of the changes were for the better, and Tesla removing the levers behind the steering wheel initially caused some frustration.

The revised Model 3 no longer has turn signal and wiper stalks behind the steering wheel. The Model S and Model X no longer have stems as of 2021; The Cybertruck never had them. All controls that were previously operated via the levers have now been moved to either the steering wheel or the touchscreen. This includes indicators, lights, windshield wipers and gear selection. (Thankfully, the wildly popular Model Y is keeping them, at least for now.)

The turn signals are two buttons stacked on top of each other on the left spoke of the steering wheel. Using them requires more thought than necessary, especially if you need to indicate when the wheel is not centered. Tesla also forces users to put the car into forward or reverse by swiping on the screen, and while that’s not as annoying as the lack of a turn signal stalk, it’s not great either.

One way around this would be to retrofit the levers from an older Tesla, but they don’t look right (they stick out too far) and require extensive modification to make them work. That’s why a solution like Enhance’s S3XY bars seems ideal for Model 3 owners who don’t have stems and don’t want to disassemble the car (and risk voiding the warranty) to get physical stems to work.

Tesla is pursuing the aftermarket

You simply stick them to the sides of the steering column and they communicate wirelessly with a command module connected to the car’s OBD port. If you only want the left or right stem, you can have just one or opt for the pair for additional features. You can customize how they work and even assign shortcuts by choosing from 60 available actions, which vary depending on the model on which they are installed.

The package, which includes the two stems, the wireless command module, and the necessary cabling for operation, costs €409.69 ($429), and the company is currently offering a 22% discount for a limited time. Shipping of the kits will begin next year. The models developed for the Model 3 will be delivered first from February 24th, while those for the Model S and X (which are €20 more expensive) will be delivered from the end of April.
