Awilda Pomales-Diaz has been named executive director of the New Jersey Puerto Rico Commission at the Department of State.

“Awilda brings extensive experience in government and exciting new ideas to reach New Jersey’s Puerto Rican community,” said Lt. Governor Tahesha Way, who leads the Puerto Rico Commission in her role as Secretary of State. “I know Awilda will expand the commission’s relationships and reach throughout our state, and I am excited to welcome her to the commission and the department.”

“Awilda has been a valued member of our team since the early days of our administration and I am pleased to see her return to public service,” said Gov. Phil Murphy. “The New Jersey-Puerto Rico Commission plays a key role in strengthening the relationship between New Jersey and Puerto Rico. I know Awilda is the right leader to advance the Commission’s important work.”

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude and excitement for this opportunity to serve the state of New Jersey and focus on the core mission of shared success for the Garden State and the island,” said Pomales-Diaz. “It is a privilege to work for an administration and a commission dedicated to this important political and economic work.”

Prior to returning to the Murphy administration, Pomales-Diaz gained private sector experience through her position as a senior account executive at a boutique lobbying firm based in New York, focusing on government affairs and public relations for corporate clients. Her work as former political director for New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Ruiz included overseeing her extensive legislative portfolio and budget advocacy.

“I am very proud to welcome Awilda and look forward to her bringing her experience working with the Governor and various levels of government to the Commission,” said Commission Co-Chair Peggy Anastos.

As senior legal counsel in Gov. Phil Murphy’s office, Pomales-Diaz was part of the team responsible for building relationships and engaging with the Legislature. She began her career as an intern in Senator Cory Booker’s office, and later positions as a legislative staffer in Hudson and Bergen Counties helped shape her passion for government. Pomales-Diaz is a graduate of Saint Peter’s University and currently lives in her hometown of Jersey City.
