A car accident knocks out power lines in East Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A vehicle accident Monday apparently took down power lines at an intersection in east Charlotte.

On Monday, Dec. 2, at approximately 3 p.m., Charlotte Police said North Tryon Street was closed at West 31st Street due to an accident. Drivers were asked to avoid the area while emergency crews worked to clear the accident.

WBTV photojournalist Lawrence Coleman took photos of the scene showing downed power lines in the area. Charlotte police initially did not provide any information about the accident or the extent of the damage.

As of 4:21 p.m. Monday, there were two Duke Energy customers without power in the immediate area. Their power was to be restored later that evening.

Duke Energy’s website says at least one of the two outages was caused by “a vehicle that damaged our equipment.”

It was not immediately known whether anyone was injured in the accident. It was also unclear whether more than one vehicle was involved in the accident.
