Jason Clarke Cast as Alex Murdaugh in Hulu Limited Series

Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer, Winning time) has signed on to portray real-life convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh in Hulu’s limited series Untitled Murdaugh Murders alongside Patricia Arquette, who plays the family matriarch, Maggie.

From co-creator and showrunner Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, the true crime drama follows Alex Murdaugh, who on the surface seems to have it all: wealth, status and unchecked privilege in rural Hampton County, South Carolina, where there are four generations of Murdaughs have built an extensive legal dynasty.

But when a fatal accident thrusts Alex, his wife Maggie, and their sons Buster and Paul into the spotlight, the all-powerful Murdaugh façade begins to crumble, leading Alex to take increasingly desperate measures to preserve the family name and reveal its dark secrets protect.

In 2023, Alex Murdaugh was convicted of the killings of his wife and son Paul, which had occurred two years earlier. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole. He was denied a new trial in January following his appeal.

Years before the murders, a schoolmate of Buster Murdaugh’s, Stephen Smith, was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Given the new evidence collected in connection with the Murdaugh family murders, Smith’s case was reopened by police and reclassified as a murder. Buster Murdaugh has denied any involvement in Smith’s death. There have been no arrests in the Smith case, but it is often linked to coverage of the Murdaugh family.

The series is based on the strange family drama of Maggie and Alex Murdaugh, an account based on countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular Murdaugh Murders Podcast.

Nick Antosca (A family friend, The law) and Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat will executive produce alongside Matney. The studio is UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Clarke recently reunited with him Zero Dark Thirty Director Kathryn Bigelow on her latest film thriller. He will next be seen as the lead actor The final frontierHe will also produce a drama series from Apple TV+. His other credits include OppenheimerHBO’s Time to Win: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, First man, MudboundChappaquiddick, Everest, And Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Clarke is represented by Robert Stein Management, CAA and attorney Carlos Goodman.
