Brian Kelly makes the case for Alabama to make the playoffs

LSU head football coach Brian Kelly believes strength of schedule should play a major role in deciding who makes the College Football Playoff.

Alabama football hopes that comes to fruition during the next unveiling of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday. Where Alabama and Miami are in the rankings will determine whether either has a chance of making the playoffs. The strength of schedule argument is in the Crimson Tide’s favor, and Kelly believes it should be given a lot of weight.

“I think I went on record at the beginning of this season that it was going to be difficult this year because I don’t know if the committee’s operating instructions were going to be quite right,” Kelly said on the Paul Finebaum Show. “Because there will be teams that have tougher schedules and better football teams and they may be left out. More wins doesn’t mean you’re a better football team. I think basketball has kind of gone through that and they’ve figured out that strength of schedule is really the best indicator. That’s why they use an RPI. Therefore, they use this and rely heavily on it to make decisions about who enters the tournament and who doesn’t. We see this every year. We always talk about some of the not strong teams winning 32 or 28 games and not progressing. This is due to the strength of the schedule. I think that will be the case this year and there will be a real outcry about some teams being left out because they didn’t get an additional win. And I think it’s wrong, and I think there will be an adjustment, and I think that adjustment will happen next year.”

Tuesday’s rankings reveal looks set to be the most anticipated of the season.
