Could Apple’s much-rumored foldable iPhone be the kickstarter the faltering foldable market needs?

Foldable iPhones were supposed to be the next big thing, with Apple widely criticized for not releasing one alongside its rivals’ models. However, customer interest in foldable smartphones is waning, although that could all change if Apple releases a foldable iPhone, according to display analyst Ross Young.

Young’s comments came in a report on the current foldable smartphone market. The report states that Apple is expected to “enter the foldable market” in the second half of 2026. The Cupertino company’s “dominant position in flagship smartphones” could potentially lead to significant growth in the foldable market in 2026, a record year for sales of the devices.

Young says he expects the foldable phone market to grow at a rate of over 30% in 2026, with another 20% growth rate in 2027 and 2028.

Rumors of a foldable iPhone have been circulating in the rumor mill for several years, and some analysts expect Apple to unveil a foldable iPhone in September 2026.

Rumors about the size of the device range from 7.9 to 8.3 inches and it could have a “clamshell” design like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.
