Like all passionate amateur athletes, runners attach particular importance to their equipment. This is why giving a running gift to an experienced runner can be risky – they probably already have a good idea of the type of equipment they’ll use. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get them something practical that they can use, premium gear that they’ve been eyeing for a long time, or maybe even something they haven’t thought of yet.

To make things easier, we asked Emily Fruge, REI’s senior category merchandising manager, for tips on buying the best running gear. She noted that since runners are very protective of their shoes, “it’s a good idea to see if they already have a favorite brand and model.”

It’s also worth thinking about the type of running they do. “Consider their running style and needs. Do they most often train for a half marathon and road run, or do they crave time in nature and try to complete their runs on local trails?”

When you give a gift to a new runner, you can give them basic equipment that they may not have yet. “For beginners just starting to increase their running performance, a simple handheld water bottle or hydration belt can make a great gift.” We took Fruge’s suggestions, as well as our own experience with devices like training headphones, to come up with the best gifts for runners of all levels find.
