Michigan man accused of attempted murder who fled police custody found guilty

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A man facing attempted murder charges who escaped police custody and led officers on a chase has been convicted, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

Jeremy William Shepard of Mason was convicted of one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of unlawful imprisonment and two counts of aggravated firearm injury.

Shepard’s conviction stems from a shooting in the summer of 2023. The trial began on November 18, 2024.

The jury’s deliberations began on November 27, 2024. According to police, Shepard, who was wearing a GPS monitoring ankle bracelet, escaped police custody while at the 30th District Court.

Shepard ran to Jackson, where he cut his bonds and attempted to flee Michigan.

Police quickly raised a nationwide alert, leading to a chase that led to Shepard’s arrest. He was found in his vehicle with several weapons, homemade “silencers,” camouflage and body armor.

Shephard was convicted for his involvement in a shooting on June 24, 2023. Police say Shepard and defendant Dustin Urie lured a man to an address in Aurelius Township before shooting him during a confrontation. The victim survived but suffered a life-changing injury.

Officials plan to file additional charges in connection with his escape attempt.

Two other suspects – Dustin Urie of Okemos and Shepard’s wife, Kristen Shepard – were also found guilty of involvement in the shooting.

Shepard’s wife was found guilty of one count of subsequent bodily harm with intent to murder and one count of tampering with evidence.

Urie was convicted of one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of unlawful imprisonment, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and three counts of aggravated firearm crimes. He faces a life sentence.

Sentencing for all three defendants is scheduled for December 30.
