The American population as a whole is getting older. Here in Arkansas, it is projected that by 2030 more than a quarter of the state’s population will be 60 years old or older. Researcher Michelle Gray is helping older adults in Arkansas and beyond improve their quality of life.

This month Short conversations from the hillGray, professor of exercise science and head of the Division of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, discusses her work to slow the physical and cognitive decline associated with aging. One recommendation she gives everyone is strength training at least twice a week.

“I want to be very clear. We won’t look like a football player. We will not look like our student-athletes on the other side of campus. But that’s enough to improve muscle strength and achieve the greatest possible health results,” Gray said.

It’s never too late to start strength training. Gray has worked with people up to 92 years old.
