How to turn criticism into change

ORLANDO, Fla. – Imagine this: You are in the office with your manager and he is showing you the areas in which you could improve.

Feedback is crucial for a company. According to BuildEmpire, 75 percent of employees who receive feedback feel it is important to their work, but sometimes others may not be happy about it. How can you make the most of constructive criticism?

How can you translate critical feedback into positive changes in the workplace? First, remember that it is nothing personal, but a way to improve your skills and performance.

According to a Harvard Business Review, 72 percent of employees view critical feedback from managers as an important step in their career development.

Next, listen to understand, not to respond. Instead of thinking about a quick defensive response, commit to actively listening. Take in all the details and summarize their comments to confirm your understanding.

See constructive criticism as a challenge for your professional development and actively seek feedback.

And always reflect on what you discussed and develop specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals – or SMART goals. This way, your action plan can be clear and actionable.

And remember to say thank you. Even if it is difficult to receive, the person telling it will help you improve.

Another way to accept constructive criticism is to approach it with the curiosity of a lifelong learner. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” Adopting this mindset turns feedback sessions into valuable learning opportunities.
