Charity Fraud | Here’s how to avoid getting scammed on Giving Tuesday as complaints mount

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — As North Carolinians open their wallets during the gift-giving season and on Giving Tuesday, scammers are out in full force, hoping to grab a share of the well-intentioned money.

The North Carolina Attorney General (AG) reports a spike in charity fraud complaints during the holidays. There are a few simple things you can do to avoid becoming a victim.

One of the AG’s top recommendations is to make sure you donate with a credit card or even a check. If someone asks you to pay via wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency, they are probably a scammer asking for your money. It is also recommended not to pay by phone or in cash by mail.

The AG also recommends donating only to organizations you seek, and not to lawyers or telemarketers. Sometimes these telemarketers receive a commission on donations collected and often use pressure sales tactics to get you to donate.

Another recommendation is to thoroughly research the charity or online fundraiser before donating. Some scammers start online fundraising campaigns on fundraising platforms or social media. Therefore, find out who is demanding your money before sending it.

You can search for nonprofits by visiting the Better Business Bureau’s Charity Tracker or checking out the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Charitable Registry.
