Winter car care tips to keep you safe on the road

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Car problems can stress anyone, especially during the winter months.

Although it has snowed a few times in the city, Neil Rasmussen, an ASE-certified master technician at a Rochester auto repair shop, said it’s never too late to take your car in to ensure your safety this winter.

The type of tire your vehicle has is important when snow begins to fall and ice forms. Newer tires have more tread, preventing your car from slipping.

At lower temperatures, the air pressure in the tires can become very low.

If you park outside, remember to check all four tires before leaving to avoid a flat on the road.

“The biggest thing about breaking down on the side of the road is when you have little kids or something else in the car,” Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen also gave some tips to keep in mind during the winter.

  • Pay attention to oil and coolant levels to prevent your car from overheating and developing leaks that can damage your engine.
  • Make sure your headlights are working so you can see during a snowstorm.
  • Keep a blanket, warm clothing, water, and food in your car in case it gets stuck in the cold.
  • Leave your car running for 5 to 10 minutes before driving.
  • Slow down, never rush or accelerate to your destination.
