Douglas Wooten Wanted: Suspected gunman in 2022 murder of Deputy Omar Ursin was in 4 states in 6 months, records say

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The suspected gunman in the 2022 shooting of an off-duty deputy moved to four states in six months, according to court records, prompting prosecutors to seek a high bond while he is in custody.

There is an arrest warrant for murder against 22-year-old Douglas Wooten.

Prosecutors have filed a motion for sufficient bail, calling him a “flight risk” after reports of sightings in Georgia, Florida, Minnesota and Iowa.

Wooten is the third person charged in the death of Harris County Pct. is accused. 3 Constable Deputy Omar Ursin, and investigators believe he was the shooter.

Friends and family of a Harris County Pct. Three police officers try to understand how someone who “didn’t have a hateful bone in his body” was shot during a quick drive to eat.

Ursin, 37, was shot while driving on Madera Run Parkway in Atascocita in August 2022. Ursin headed home after picking up dinner for his family.

Court documents show that the suspects’ car, which had five people in it, was driving next to Ursin’s personal car. Two witnesses said Wooten rolled down the rear passenger side window and fired four shots. Ursin crashed into a tree and died, and the suspects walked into the neighborhood.

Two of the suspects, Ahsim Taylor Jr. and Jayland Womack, were arrested the next month because ankle monitors from a previous murder placed them at the crime scene. They have been held in prison without bond ever since.

The two 20-year-old suspects were already out on bail on unrelated murder charges, according to records. Prosecutors are asking the judge to revoke their bonds altogether.

According to the records, Wooten headed to his mother’s home in Atlanta, Georgia.

The four others in the car that night told investigators that Wooten told them he fired because Ursin pulled out a gun. It is a story that has not been confirmed. In fact, officers said Ursin’s gun was holstered when they arrived.

Ursin worked for Harris County Pct. 3 for six years. He was married and had a little girl.
