REXBURG, Idaho, December 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — ITD District 6 has made significant advancements in traffic safety and mobility for the 207,000 residents it serves through the deployment of two HyMax hydrogen fuel cell systems, marking the first deployment of this innovative technology in Idaho. HyMax is designed to redefine the way emergency power supports critical infrastructure. It ensures uninterrupted operation and lighting at Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDIs) during power outages and severe weather events, meeting growing needs for safety, reliability and sustainability.

A smarter and safer approach to power
Traditional emergency power solutions such as diesel generators and standalone batteries face major challenges. Diesel generators are noisy, polluting and limited by fuel storage, while batteries, while cleaner, have limited lifespan and capacity, typically only providing four hours of power. These limitations make critical intersections vulnerable to extended outages.
HyMax hydrogen fuel cells overcome these challenges by providing continuous power for up to five days or longer when combined with existing battery backup systems (BBS), depending on load and environmental factors. This expanded capability ensures that critical infrastructure such as the DDIs in Idahoremains operational even in the most difficult circumstances, ensuring public safety and mobility.
