Tiger Woods advocated for golfers competing on the United States team in the Ryder Cup to be given $1 million each to donate to charities of their choice.

“No, the Ryder Cup itself brings in so much money, why can’t we give it to different charities?” Woods told reporters on Tuesday at the Hero World Challenge in Nassau, Bahamas, according to The Athletic’s Gabby Herzig.

“And what’s wrong with every player, 12 players, getting a million dollars and having the opportunity to donate to great charities that they’re involved with so they can help? It’s their hometowns, where they come from, all the different junior golf sports.” Associations or ventures in which the members are involved. It’s never really been about getting paid, it’s been about how we can provide resources to support our sport or support things that we believe in back home because it’s so hard to get on this team, it is only 12 people. What’s wrong with being able to provide more resources?”

As Herzig noted, the PGA of America currently provides every American player with $200,000 to donate to charities. None of the professionals participating in the event are paid themselves.
