Chicago couple arrested after setting a car on fire and reporting it missing

Riverside police arrested two Chicago residents on Nov. 21 for a 2023 arson attack in the city.

On May 25, 2023, at approximately 11:04 p.m., police were dispatched to the corner of Selborne Road and Lindberg Road where they saw a car on fire. Officers ran the license plates and learned the car was registered in Mount Prospect. A resident in the 700 block of Selborne Road provided police with doorbell camera footage that showed a man parking the car around 9:13 p.m. before setting the driver’s front seat on fire and heading toward Lindberg at 9:18 p.m Road drove.

Later that day, police contacted the Chicago resident who owned the burned vehicle and said she had just reported the car stolen to Chicago police. The woman told Riverside police that she had parked the car outside her new home the night before, but discovered it was missing after returning from work, where she drove her other car. Riverside police said they “did not detect any concern” in the woman’s voice that her car was believed to have been stolen and was found in flames.
