Topeka woman sentenced to more than five years in prison for killing three children in a 2022 car crash

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Topeka woman convicted of killing three children in a 2022 car crash was sentenced to over five years in prison on Tuesday, December 3rd.

A Shawnee court judge sentenced Peery to 64 months, including two consecutive 32-month sentences, for two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Peery was given an additional 72 months for involuntary manslaughter, along with the two counts of aggravated assault, to run concurrently with the 64 months.

Amber Peery was convicted in August 2024 for an October 2022 accident when she attempted to make an illegal U-turn on the Kansas Turnpike.

Peery was charged in June 2023 with involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Three children, including Peery’s daughter, died in the accident. Peery and two other children in the vehicle were injured.

Her trial was postponed to July 2023 and postponed until August when she was found guilty on all charges.

Peery was denied a new trial in October 2024. Peery requested a new trial or acquittal, arguing that she was not solely responsible for the failure or that she had made a reckless decision to turn things around.

Peery’s sentencing was also postponed to a later date, originally scheduled for October 3, 2024.
