Man fatally shot outside home near Rosebud, neighbor charged with murder

A man was fatally shot outside his home in Rosebud, Arkansas, on Friday evening, leading to his neighbor’s arrest on murder charges.

White County Dispatch received a call at 9 p.m. from Violet Holifield saying her husband, Gary Knight, had been shot twice on their property at 479 County Line Road.

White County officers, investigators and NorthStar EMS responded to the scene where they found Knight suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was taken to Unity Health Hospital in Searcy, where he later died.

At 9:21 p.m., James Trenton Barley, Knight’s neighbor, contacted dispatch and said he was involved in the shooting. Barley identified his firearm and waited for officers at his apartment.

Upon his arrival, officers arrested Barley and he gave a statement to investigators.

A search and seizure warrant was executed at Barley’s property, resulting in the collection of firearms and ballistics evidence.

Barley was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was taken to the White County Detention Center.

The victim’s body, along with other evidence, will be submitted to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Arkansas State Crime Lab for further review and investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
