Michigan coach Sherrone Moore fires offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore After a disappointing 7-5 season, he didn’t wait long for changes to his coaching staff. Moore let offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell go even after the Wolverines beat Ohio State in Columbus.

“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I have made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and pursue a different direction,” Moore said in a statement. “This was a decision that I believe was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and commitment to the university, Michigan football and our student-athletes. I wish him all the best for his future coaching tasks.”

Tight ends coach Steve Casula will serve as interim offensive coordinator in the meantime while Moore searches nationally for Campbell’s replacement.

The move comes as no surprise. It was rumored that Moore would make a change after landing the Wolverines Bryce Underwoodthe country’s top overall prospect (and No. 1 quarterback) last month. Michigan will likely look to diversify the offense more to suit its capabilities, including a much better passing game.

Campbell came to Michigan from Old Dominion, where he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2020 and 2021. In 2021, Campbell helped the Monarchs average 28.5 points per game and 385.4 yards per contest – before that, he was an offensive analyst at Penn State from 2017 to 2019. He was hired as offensive line coach last February Grant Newsome.

“Kirk and Grant are two bright offensive minds,” Moore said at the time. “They have brought a lot to our offensive staff and will make even greater contributions in their new roles. I am pleased to have Kirk and Grant assume greater responsibility in our offense as they continue to work with our players to further their development on and off the field.”

But as the season progressed, confidence waned. Moore insisted that he would not take on the player’s role, but it was clear that he was not happy with the offense towards the end of the season. Although former quarterback JJ McCarthy praised Campbell as his quarterbacks coach, the Wolverines struggled to move the ball this year after his promotion and lacked an identity for most of the year.
