How the CFP Selection Committee rated Alabama and why

It wasn’t surprising that the College Football Playoff Selection Committee ranked Alabama football at No. 11 in its latest rankings released Tuesday night, but it was somewhat controversial. Should the Crimson Tide reach the 12-team tournament, it would be with three losses and not reaching the conference championship game.

However, strength of schedule plays a large role in the selection process, and the Southeastern Conference finished the regular season with seven teams ranked in the various polls. Alabama was also No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and coaches polls.

However, that doesn’t mean the Crimson Tide can start packing for a first-round game to be played on campus Dec. 20-21. The Big 12 champion gets an automatic bid, which combined with the conference championship results could still knock Alabama out of the bracket.

Here’s what College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee Chairman Warde Manuel and CFP Executive Director Rich Clark had to say about anything directly or indirectly related to Alabama via the rankings:

Q. My question is, if SMU loses in the ACC Championship game, how will you rate SMU compared to Alabama?

WARDE MANUEL: You know, that’s something we do
will decide in the hall at the end of these games
when we evaluate what is happening in the championship. I
I can’t go into the future and tell you exactly how
The result of this discussion will be. It depends on
the outcome of the game and how it is played and the results
himself.
We’ll just have to wait and see how the committee does
I will analyze the game depending on the result.
Where will it go in terms of rankings and people?
will move or will not move.

Q. I want to clarify. It’s not a projection question, but it’s reflected in what you said: when teams don’t play, there are no data points. I think there are some fans who might think, well, Clemson is playing, Clemson played South Carolina; Couldn’t Clemson’s results somehow change the trajectory of South Carolina’s fortunes? I see what you’re saying, yes you should be able to move teams if they’re not playing, but I think there’s probably some questioning from fans about whether these teams could have an impact on other teams’ resumes. I wanted to ask what the committee thought when you talked about not moving some of these teams that aren’t playing.

WARDE MANUEL: Well, that’s a question I asked
I get it, but we’ve already included that. We know it
Which teams beat which teams they play on?
Championship games, and so we have already evaluated how
These teams have been playing all season.
The fact that they are hitting someone else at this point only adds to this
the CV of the two teams, the one that wins, the one
Whoever loses in the championship game, but that doesn’t change anything
our rating. We know who won games
Teams participating in these championships and we have already done so
We took this into account in this week’s review.

Q. Some people say, well, it changes the rating of Clemson, and it doesn’t necessarily change the rating of the teams Clemson plays. But I just wanted to clarify.

WARDE MANUEL: Right, I understand the question. The
Vice versa when we play against teams that are a team
I think the people who were lost would be the same way
outraged that we are doing this. In other words: we have to
– we have already thought about this in our discussions this week
The resumes of these teams in terms of who plays in the
Championship games and how they did like us
I ranked the teams this week, so we’re not giving anything away – me
get it. Some people think we should give them a boost if
They beat a team that wins, but on the other hand, they beat them too
I don’t want this to cause credit to be lost or downgraded because
The team lost in the championship, something like that.

Q. I want to clarify something here that you said on the show a few minutes ago. I want to make sure I understand it. If a team that is currently ranked in the top 12 loses in the conference championship game on Saturday, that doesn’t mean they would fall out of the top 12, right?

WARDE MANUEL: No, sir. I say – in answer to the question
question, if you take, for example, that Tennessee is ahead
SMU, Indiana trails SMU; Tennessee will not fall
under Indiana at any point in time. Neither team plays.
But SMU could move up depending on how we value it
the game. They could stay where they are, or they could
move down depending on the outcome of the game. But
Tennessee and Indiana would never flip in this example.
Indiana would never overtake Tennessee and
Tennessee would never fall under Indiana because we did
I have already evaluated them. There is no other data point
because they don’t take part in the championship games.
So we have nothing further to add to the review
So we can’t move these teams above or below each one
other.

Q. But could SMU fall under Alabama if it loses?

WARDE MANUEL: Possibly yes. And they can move
also the teams mentioned above. Again, it just depends
Result of the game.

Q: You mentioned on the ESPN broadcast that a deciding factor between Alabama and Miami was Alabama winning against ranked teams and teams over .500. How did the committee account for the losses, considering that two of Alabama’s three losses were against teams not ranked .500, while Miami’s losses were against teams over .500 and ranked?

WARDE MANUEL: We talked about it exactly as you explained
out of. It is something we evaluate, both the victories and the defeats,
how the teams play, where they play. All these things
Keep this in mind as we debate and discuss
these teams.
Look, both are very good and I understand
Alabama, the committee ranked Alabama one spot higher
Miami, but it doesn’t detract from how we see Miami itself
There have been two defeats in the last three weeks. We’re still thinking
Miami is a very strong team.
What mattered was that their work was different from ours
rated Alabama and Miami, not just wins, not just
Losses, but the entire season and how these teams
carried out.

F. Warde: When comparing playoff contenders, if one participant made its conference championship game and the other didn’t, the team that wins the title game obviously gets an automatic bid if it’s a Power 4 title game acts. But does the team that makes it to the conference title game give the team that loses an advantage in the eyes of the committee over the other contender that didn’t make it to the title game?

WARDE MANUEL: Listen, the committee has coaches,
Athletic directors, former players who played
Game. We have great respect for the teams that make it
their championship games, and we give them a lot of credit
for what they have done all season.
But we were asked by the commissioners to establish a ranking
Top 25 by the end of the championship weekend and
Therefore, we are obliged to take a look at these data points
and the results of these games to classify the final
Top 25, and that’s what they’ve been asking us to do ever since
Beginning, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do this weekend
the games are played.

Q. I know you said earlier that SMU could be eliminated if it lost to Clemson in the same manner. By the same token, would that help Clemson get more data points because maybe if there was a bust, Clemson would win?

WARDE MANUEL: I actually didn’t say SMU would fall
out of. I’m not sure they’ll fold if they lose. What we will do
Re-evaluate and observe them in performance
the game, with great appreciation for the teams that are
play. 18 teams are playing this weekend,
and we will observe and evaluate them all
Results of these games, and we’ll see how they pan out when
They move at all, as I mentioned in the interview on ESPN.
Two years ago, TCU lost and remained ranked No. 3 in this regard
year, and things like this can happen. People can lose
and maybe stay where they are. They can move like us
have done it in other years and make it big, or they can leave
just a little down. All that matters is the result
Game.
