A fire at Menlo Manor in Edison, New Jersey leaves 10 people injured, including 2 in critical condition

EDISON, N.J. (WABC) — Several people were injured Tuesday, including two who are in critical condition, after a fire broke out at a senior center in Edison, New Jersey, officials said.

Edison Mayor Sam Joshi said the Edison, South Brunswick and Metuchen fire departments responded to the four-alarm fire at Menlo Manor, a senior living community at 1061 Inman Ave.

Emergency crews worked to evacuate the building, which has five floors and 240 apartments.

NewsCopter 7 was over the scene and captured footage of burned-out homes, numerous broken windows and seniors being rushed to safety.

Edison officials say there were 10 injuries in total. Two of the victims, a man and a woman from the apartment where the fire broke out, are in critical condition. Eight other people were treated for smoke inhalation.

Mayor Joshi initially said one person had been killed, but officials clarified that doctors were able to resuscitate the victim, who was hospitalized without vital organs.

As for the building, the entire facility was evacuated for the night. Although only one of the four wings is technically uninhabitable, firefighters are unable to reset the fire alarm, meaning the other three wings cannot be occupied and more than 200 residents are displaced.

The American Red Cross is on site, and Edison Township is proposing to house all displaced residents in hotels.

There is still no information about the cause of the fire.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
