How an Apple Watch saved an Indian entrepreneur’s life in a car accident in the US

An Indian entrepreneur used X to share a life-saving experience he recently had in a car accident thanks to his Apple Watch.

Kuldeep Dhankar, founder of Last9.io, was caught in a traffic jam on a US highway when his car was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Dhankar revealed that his Apple Watch quickly recognized the potential damage and automatically dialed 911, saving his life.

Dhankar said an officer immediately arrived at the scene and he was given medical attention. He was then able to safely continue his journey. An image attached to the post showed a California Highway Patrol officer investigating the scene of the accident, while Dhankar’s car was badly damaged from the front.

“Yesterday, while we were stuck in traffic on I-5, a car rear-ended us. The car behind us was probably totaled. (We are completely safe.) The Apple Watch detected that we had an accident and triggered an emergency call.” “911 and within minutes an officer was on the scene, we were able to reach our destination safely and were from Apple Watch and “Very impressed with the California Highway Patrol.”

Several X users left their concerned comments on the post. “I’m glad you’re doing well! The Apple Watch did its job well.” Another user wrote: “Damn, that sounds terrible. I’m glad you’re okay.”

Apple Watch has a built-in accident detection feature that allows it to alert emergency services in the event of a life-threatening accident and also notify your emergency contacts. Using advanced sensors and algorithms, the device can detect a serious accident in the shortest possible time and alert emergency services within 20 seconds by sending an audio message with the exact location of the accident.

To call emergency services, your Apple Watch or iPhone must have a nearby cellular connection or have Wi-Fi calling enabled with available Wi-Fi coverage.

If cellular and Wi-Fi coverage is not available and your iPhone 14 or later model is near your Apple Watch, accident detection notifications can be sent to emergency services via the Emergency SOS satellite system, if available.

Crash detection is always enabled by default. To turn off alerts and automatic emergency calls from Apple after a severe crash, go to Settings > SOS > Crash Detection and turn off Call After Severe Crash.
