Oregon’s attorney general is criticizing the state law’s “leniency” to protect a man convicted of raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl

An 18-year-old Oregon man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl, and a prosecutor is criticizing a state law that would significantly reduce his time behind bars.

Daniel Ryan Gore could be released from prison in less than a decade under the law in question because he was only 16 at the time of the murder.

Senate legislation passed five years ago that would provide Gore protections, Senate Bill 1008, drew intense criticism from a Washington County prosecutor.

According to KPTV, Assistant District Attorney John Gerhard said even the presiding judge in the case was shocked to learn of the legal protections.

Gerhard, who prosecuted the case, said he believed Gore was a violent criminal who would not receive the punishment he deserved.

“Because of the crimes he committed, he should spend the rest of his life in prison,” Gerhard told KPTV.

Gore was convicted last month of the 2022 rape and murder of 13-year-old Milana Li in Beaverton, Oregon. Authorities accused him of luring the girl to a wooded area, assaulting her and leaving her body in a stream.

He was sentenced on Monday.

Although he was 16 at the time of the crime, he was found fit to be tried as an adult due to the seriousness of his crimes.
