After a long dispute, the CCSD school board votes to repair Mount Charleston Elementary School

The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees voted 5-1 to repair a Mount Charleston Elementary School that has been closed since August 2023.

Parents and advocates at Lundy Elementary School have been fighting to reopen the school.

The board voted Aug. 4 and 3 not to repair the school because several cited repair costs for damage from Tropical Storm Hilary at about $6.8 million.

The board instead voted to explore expanding the library across the street to include classrooms and a playground, something community members opposed.

One of the deciding votes was Trustee Katie Williams, who represented the district in which the school is located.

In September, a Metro Police investigation revealed she was believed to have been living out of state for several months.

The district said their votes would not be reaudited.

She was replaced in October by Nakia Jackson-Hale, who will serve as District B trustee until permanent elected trustee Lydia Dominguez is sworn in in January.

Jackson Hale brought the reconsideration of the decision not to fix Lundy to Wednesday’s meeting.

Present in the room were several Mount Charleston community members who spoke to the board about reopening their school as quickly as possible.

Aside from voting to repair Lundy, the district will also expedite repairs ahead of any new school construction projects that have not yet begun.

The goal is completion by August 2025.

However, the date was not included in the vote.
