Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins have the best chance of becoming number one in the MLB Draft

The order for the 2025 MLB Draft will be announced next Tuesday evening at the MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas.

Keep in mind that for several years there has been a draft lottery among teams that missed the playoffs, similar to what we see in the NBA. It’s no longer based solely on records, like in the NFL.

This means that the Miami Marlins and the Colorado Rockies have the best chances of first place with 22.5 percent each. The Cleveland Guardians were picked No. 1 in 2024 despite only having 2 percent odds, so crazy things happen.

Both the Marlins and Rockies could desperately use the top pick as they both had terrible seasons in 2024. Colorado finished 61-101, while Miami finished 62-100. The Chicago White Sox, who posted a 41-121 record, are ineligible for the top pick due to some complex collective bargaining agreements.

It’s ironic to see the Rockies and Marlins together here, since they both entered the league at the same time (1993). The Rockies have never had the No. 1 pick in the draft, but selected Stanford pitcher Gregory Reynolds No. 2 overall in 2006.

Recently non-tendered Brendan Rodgers was the No. 3 pick in 2015.

The Marlins selected former All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez No. 1 overall in 2000. They also selected pitcher Josh Beckett No. 2 in 1999. He helped the Marlins win the World Series in 2003.
