Inside Daniel Day-Lewis’ “Highly Anticipated Comeback” to Acting (Exclusive)

Daniel Day Lewis These days, he’s all about family, as evidenced by his decision to come out of retirement and star in his son’s new film – and an insider says he’s crafting a succession plan that will ensure his legacy lives on for future generations.

“Daniel’s ‘retirement’ in 2017/2018 always came with an asterisk, as everyone knew he would never give up cinema forever, while his wife and children continued to have a keen professional interest in the film business and, of course, collaboration more with Daniel,” an insider tells Closer exclusively.

The source adds that Daniel, 67, has been “quietly working for the last few years” to figure out “how to make a financially successful indie film without the interference of a studio.”

The Oscar winner made his last acting appearance in 2017 Phantom thread before his team announced he was retiring from show business.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor,” his spokesman said. Leslee Darttold diversity in June 2017. “He is extremely grateful to all his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will have any further comment on this matter.”

To the great delight of his fans, seven years later he is finally active again as an actor. Daniel will star in Focus Features and Plan B’s upcoming film Anemone, which will mark his son’s directorial debut Ronan Day Lewis.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Ronan Day-Lewis, a brilliant visual artist, on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” said the Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement in October. “They have written a truly exceptional script and we look forward to working with the Plan B team to bring audiences their shared vision.”

A summary of the film on IMDb states: “Family bonds between fathers, sons and brothers are explored as complex relationships unfold through personal journeys and generational conflicts.”

Daniel shares Ronan, 26, and son Cashel with his wife Rebecca Miller. He is also father to son Gabriel, whom he shares with his ex Isabelle Adjani.

“Daniel has discovered that the best thing a small film can have is a world-famous actor in the cast!” says the source Closer of Daniel’s return to the film industry. “The timing here is really telling, as Daniel has saved his highly anticipated comeback for a family project that he also helps with behind the scenes.”

This isn’t the first time Daniel has collaborated on a project with one of his family members.

“Of course he’s done this before with his wife Rebecca’s film The Ballad of Jack and Rose But it’s very different to be led by your son instead of your wife, and Daniel absolutely adores his children,” the insider adds. “Coming back into this film and in this way was never a difficult decision for him!”
