An Albert Lea man was charged Thursday in Freeborn County District Court with striking another man with his car during an altercation Wednesday night on Louis Street.

Lancelot James Marcks, 20, faces second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Court documents State troopers were dispatched to 1321 Louis St. Wednesday evening on a report of disorderly conduct. When officers arrived, the victim said he drove to Marcks’ house with his girlfriend, the mother of Marcks’ child, to discuss threats. According to reports, Marcks had attempted to remove the child from the mother’s care.

He said Marcks caused the car he was driving to accelerate and hit him, causing him to hit the hood and windshield of the car before driving over the car and landing on the road. Marcks then reportedly grabbed a rock and threw it at him.

A witness told police he saw Marcks turn his car around and speed toward the victim before hitting him with the car. The person also confirmed that Marcks threw an object at the victim.

A witness stated that when the victim attempted to take a photo of Marcks’ license plate, Marcks allegedly accelerated the car and then hit him.

An officer inspecting Marcks’ car found evidence consistent with drag marks or handprints on the hood, as well as other marks on the windshield and a spider web crack in the top center of the windshield.

Marcks initially denied any physical interaction but later said he had thrown a punch. He wasn’t hurt.

The other man had a graze wound on his hand and a cut on the inside of his lip.

District Judge Ross Leuning set Marcks’ unconditional bail at $50,000 and conditional bail at $1,000 in court Thursday. The conditions included no use or possession of firearms or dangerous weapons, no threatening or aggressive behavior and no contact with the victim.

His next court appearance is scheduled for December 19.
