“Anyone who knew anything knew she was the best.”

Connie Chung may have “underestimated her talent and overestimated her sexuality” in her new memoir, but her readers did not.

On the December 3 episode of the Celebrity Memoir Book Club podcast, hosted by New York comedians Ashley Hamilton and Claire Parker, the duo shared a funny moment from Chung’s time on former Senator George McGovern’s campaign, as described in Connie.

Chung was “part of this gang of reporters” who followed McGovern around the country, Hamilton said, and one night she decided to call her boyfriend from a phone booth. Then two more reporters sprint to the phone booth.

They tried to talk to her about something, but — considering she was one of the few female reporters — Chung viewed their actions as sexual harassment.

“They’re sort of sexually harassing her,” Parker said. “So she rips their pants off and walks away to humiliate them.”

But Chung, legendary journalist that she is, did extensive research for this memoir, Parker said. While interviewing everyone “who had ever known her,” Chung discovered that the incident had nothing to do with her appearance or the fact that she was the only woman.

“The reason they banged on her pay phone booth was because they thought she was going to get another bullet,” Parker said. “Because she was known to work earlier and later than everyone else.”

“And they said, ‘Oh, we can’t lose another one to Connie,'” Parker continued.

Chung found that the other reporters were trying to distract them so they could get the story themselves.

“And she said, ‘I guess I underestimated my talent and overestimated my sexuality,'” Parker said, adding that the tenacious reporter felt she had to “fend for herself.”

Hamilton and Parker noted that while their methods were sometimes a little unconventional, Chung “held his own and was respected as one of the guys.”

“Anyone who knew anything knew she was the best,” Parker said.
