Exemplary Principal Honored with Key to the City of Paterson, New Jersey

PATERSON (WABC) – A point of pride for a principal from Paterson, New Jersey.

One of the city’s public middle schools was ranked number one in the state by US News and World Report.

On Wednesday, Nancy Castro, principal of School No. 28, was honored with the Key to the City by Mayor Andre Sayegh.

What sets this school apart are the classrooms that engage children’s senses and foster a passion for learning, as well as the educators.

“I like that every teacher enjoys teaching, and I like the principal,” said one kindergarten student.

Castro has maintained high standards and expectations for all students.

It is a Blue Ribbon school that has twice been ranked as the best elementary and middle school in the country.

“The goal in life is to leave places where you found them. My greatest reward is knowing that I can make a difference in my community,” Castro said.

The parents are very satisfied that Ms. Castro has been leading the team for 10 years so far.

“You not only feel a sense of academic excellence, but also an area where you can be curious and grow socially and emotionally,” said mother Farhanna Sayegh.

Teachers say she draws inspiration from her every day.

“She made us grow. I believe our school is full of teacher leaders and that makes our building very special,” said kindergarten teacher Lynda Alvarez.

This magnet school produces outstanding records, with children achieving 95% or better math proficiency and 100% or better reading proficiency.

“It’s about teamwork, it’s a joint effort. This success belongs to everyone,” Castro said.
